U.C. Berkeley canceled a scheduled appearance by Milo Yiannopoulos after protests turned violent last night. While many on the left condemned the actions of the mob, they certainly seemed pleased with the results.
In a statement, the university blamed the violence on “150 masked agitators who came onto campus and interrupted an otherwise non-violent protest.”
Protesters threw rocks and commercial grade fireworks at police, set fires with Molotov cocktails, broke out student union center windows and assaulted Milo/Trump supporters. Officials reported at least six injuries.
“We condemn in the strongest possible terms the violence and unlawful behavior that was on display, and deeply regret that those tactics will now overshadow the efforts to engage in legitimate and lawful protest against the performer’s presence and perspectives.”
A lot of people on the left went out of their way to echo the messaging of the folks at U.C. Berkeley, insisting the majority of protestors were peaceful, and the violence was perpetrated by a minority. This may be true. But a lot of the folks on the left certainly liked what the violence got them.
Debra Messing tweeted the news Milo cancelled his event at Berkeley, exclaiming in all caps “RESISTANCE WORKS #Resist #NeverStop.”
Now I guarantee you, Milo wouldn’t have canceled his appearance if it was only a bunch of people peacefully marching around in the street chanting slogans. The violence and the threat of harm led to the cancellation of the event.
No violence, no cancellation, no celebration.
So, people on the left might tell you they disapprove of violent tactics, but they darn sure like the results.
